WORCESTER – A video captured by one of the people arrested at the June 1 protest in Main South appears to show police stomping the woman's phone as she narrated her apprehension. "This is a criminal offense, and I believe charges need to be filed," Joseph F. Hennessey, the woman's lawyer and a former Ashland police officer, said Friday. In the video, riot police can be seen rushing toward Glynn Crum, a recent Clark University graduate who was streaming the protest live to the internet via her iPhone. Crum drops her phone as police rush her, but it continues recording with its camera facing the sky, and she continues to narrate as she's arrested. "Police are punching my boyfriend repeatedly in the back!" Crum shouts, at which point a boot can be seen stepping on the phone. Over the next couple of minutes, the phone captures what appears to be a riot officer stepping on the phone repeatedly, to the point where cracks in the screen ...

COVID-19 fuels a drop in new smartphone sales an upswing for recycled phones

Gambar
Coronavirus-led shutdown of key manufacturing plants in China and consumer financial concerns fuel interest in pre-owned phone sales, according to a Gartner report. Among its many results, the coronavirus has put a damper on first-adopters, some of whom, pre-pandemic, would be the first in line to buy the new iPhone SE in September. But new smartphone sales dropped 20.2% for the first quarter of 2020 (Q1 2020), according to a new report from Gartner.  SEE: Mobile device computing policy (TechRepublic Premium) While edicts to shelter-at-home and the cloud of economic uncertainty affected the sales of new smartphones, recycled phones are on the upswing (by 24%). A recycled or refurbished phone is generally one that has been traded or sold so the owner can upgrade to the new version or a "better" phone. Gartner's report,...

Facebook tool converts smartphone photos into 3D images in seconds

Gambar
A team of Facebook researchers has created an end-to-end system that helps users turn photos they take on their smartphones into 3D images within seconds. The new framework provides users with a more practical approach to 3D photography, addressing several design objectives. Users can access the new technology via their own mobile device and the real-time conversion from a 2D input image to 3D is seamless, requiring no sophisticated photographic skills. It only takes a few seconds to process and the method is robust enough to work on almost any photo - new or one previously taken. Over the last century, photography has gone through several tech 'upgrades' that increased the level of immersion. "Initially, all photos were black and white and grainy, then came colour photography, and then digital photography brought us higher quality and better-resolution images," said Johannes Kopf, lead author of the work and research scientist at Facebook. ...

Every state has started to reopen but smartphone data suggests people are still reluctant to go out

Gambar
All 50 states have started to reopen following COVID-19 shutdowns, with most restrictions on stores and restaurants being gradually lifted. But phone location data shows that people across the US are moving around less than usual, a sign that consumers might still be wary about shopping amid the pandemic. Even in major cities where car traffic has returned to normal, people are walking and taking public transit far less than usual, according to aggregate mobility data provided by Apple. Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. All 50 states have started to reopen following COVID-19 shutdowns — but that doesn't mean consumers are going back to business as usual. Location data gathered from Americans' smartphones suggests that, even in states that have been reopened for weeks, people are not leaving home and moving around as much as they were pre-COVID. Senate Republicans Want To Be Able To Crack Your Encrypted Smartphone

Gambar
Senate Republicans have introduced a new bill that seeks to weaken encryption on smartphones and other devices. Allowing law enforcement to easily crack the encryption to get evidence on a suspect. The bill is known as the "Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act" and it calls for an end to "warrant-proof" encryption that has disrupted criminal investigations. To no surprise, Senator Lindsey Graham was the one to introduce the bill. Alongside Senators Tom Cotton and Marsha Blackburn. What would it mean, if this bill passed? If the Lawful Access to Encrypted Data Act were to pass, it would require tech companies to help investigators access encrypted data, if that assistance would help carry out a warrant. The good thing here is that companies like Google and Apple won't have to help law enforcement crack the device just because they want in. It has to help carry out a warrant. Lawful Access seems to be something that would likely pass through Congress, even with sup...

There have been calls for boycott of Chinese products from several quarters following the Ladakh clash that left 20 Indian Army personnel dead. "The early trends are exciting. But, Indian handset makers need low-cost funds to counter the deep-pocketed Chinese companies," Executive Director of the Jaina Group, which owns the 'Karbonn' brand, Abhishek Garg, told PTI. Smartphone app uses voice recordings to detect fluid in the lungs

Voice analysis by a smartphone app identifies lung congestion in heart failure patients, allowing early intervention before their condition deteriorates. The small study is presented today on HFA Discoveries, a scientific platform of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). Detecting antibodies with glowing proteins thread and a smartphone

Gambar
To defend the body, the immune system makes proteins known as antibodies that latch onto the perceived threat, be it HIV, the new coronavirus or, as is the case in autoimmune disease, part of the body itself. In a new proof-of-concept study in ACS Sensors, researchers describe a new system for detecting antibodies within a pinprick of blood within minutes, using an unlikely combination of cotton thread, glowing proteins and a smartphone camera.  While some tests simply detect the presence of an antibody, sometimes doctors want to know how much is circulating in the blood. Such quantitative tests are used to diagnose a number of conditions, including infections and autoimmune diseases. Although a quantitative antibody test is not yet approved for use in the U.S., such a test could potentially aid in assessing immunity to SARS-CoV-2. However, quantitative testing current...

Huawei's P40 Pro Plus smartphone has a powerful camera — but the lack of Google is a big drawback

The Huawei P40 Pro Plus.Ryan Browne | CNBCHuawei is launching its new high-end P40 Pro Plus smartphone internationally later this month, and it's a formidable challenger to Samsung's top flagship device, the Galaxy S20 Ultra. But there's a catch. The Chinese tech giant was added to a U.S. trade blacklist known as the "Entity List" last year, meaning it's no longer able to offer Google services on its new phones. As it can't offer a licensed version of Android, Huawei instead has its own "forked" version without any Google services.I've been trying out the P40 Pro Plus for the past few days, and while I'm really impressed with the hardware, I can't help feeling there's something missing. Smartphones have been pushing the ceiling on specifications to stay relevant in the competitive market. One of the primary parameters that has turned out to be an important aspect is the RAM on the device. Only a few smartphones in the world can claim to have 16GB RAM. Here’s how technology is affecting the media industry

Gambar
When the phrase 'time and tide wait for none' was coined, someone forgot to add 'technology' to the pleasing alliteration. Technology is no less than a living thing, speeding ahead in its evolution, and we see the results everywhere — the ever-slimming smartphone, high-resolution content, and the dusty, forgotten floppy disk buried in the drawer. When it comes to the media industry, technology has a bearing on every aspect of the process, and every shift is done deliberately and sees an immense difference. For example, take lighting. We find ourselves choosing LED over the warm glow of Tungsten bulbs. With far lower operating temperatures, LED lights are much easier to adjust and are more convenient. The industry has seen a shift from tapes to hard disks, from film cameras to digital. This choice has eased costs, reduced film wastage, smoothened shooting, and editing procedures. Hard disks also offer a secure and convenient back-up experience, allowing for quick access,...
