Samsung Suddenly Exposes Radical New Galaxy Smartphone

Considering everything we know about the Galaxy Note 20, there were not meant to be many surprises left. Until this.

If you visit the Samsung.com Rewards page at the time of publishing, you will find the company has casually posted a new hero image of a stunning, unidentified Galaxy smartphone which uses the same chassis design as the Note range but has no notch or hole-punch camera. It looks too good to be true but what makes it intriguing, is Samsung is leaking similar images elsewhere.

Picked up by SamMobile, a now-removed image, also on the Samsung Rewards page, showed a similar Galaxy smartphone sandwiched between the Galaxy S10+ (famous for its dual front camera hole punch) and the Galaxy S20 (single centred hole punch). Again the mysterious phone in the middle has no hole punch at all. So while a concept phone may well appear in isolation, but it seems very odd to then also post it between current flagships.

There's history here as well. For starters, Samsung has a habit of posting its upcoming smartphones through 'accidental' leaks on its website and in marketing material. The company has also long promised to deliver this technology. Going back to November 2018, Samsung's product marketing director Hassan Anjum revealed the company's 'New Infinity' panel which hid the camera under the display. He claimed they "are just around the corner, and I can't wait to tell you more about them."

More recently, well connected Samsung insider Ice Universe and reliable Korean site The Elec both stated that Samsung will launch a 2020 Galaxy smartphone with an under-display camera (UDC). The Elec explained that the technology uses pixels in the display which can become transparent when the camera needs to see through them. This isn't science fiction, rival Oppo has already demoed a working prototype, so the race is on.

That said, it's important to remain cautious. Samsung pulled a similar trick in March but told me the notch-less device in its commercial was a concept (video above). I have reached out to Samsung for further comment and will update this article when I have a response. At this stage, however, the answer will be strange either way because Samsung is either providing Note 20 easter eggs very early or the company is increasingly integrating fake smartphones into its product line-ups and services, which is misleading.

Needless to say, let's keep our fingers tightly crossed that it's the former.
