Revamped PLI Scheme Aims to Boost Local Smartphone Manufacturing in India

Gambar
© Provided by News18 Revamped PLI Scheme Aims to Boost Local Smartphone Manufacturing in India Smartphone manufacturing in India is being seen as a big avenue going forward, and the government of India is making a few changes to enable that. At the top of the charts is a revision of the existing production-linked incentive scheme for smartphone manufacturers, where an empowered committee has decided that it will no longer evaluate manufacturing plant and machinery brought into India by a brand at just 40 percent of its value. Revealed in a report by The Economic Times, this was one of the clauses to which Apple had raised an objection to. Now, the government is reportedly in discussion with manufacturers such as Foxconn, Wistron and Pegatron to attempt to move some of their manufacturing activities over to India. Interestingly, the government committee that made the above change on Friday also voted to begin involving industry players in meetings and discussions...

My photos: Forgotten them? Here's how to look at your smartphone photos videos on your TV

Gambar
Marc Saltzman, Special to USA TODAY Published 6:00 a.m. ET May 30, 2020 We're swimming in photos. Here are ways to share, store and organize you may not know. Be honest: Once you've taken photos and videos on your smartphone, how often do you look at these captured moments? If the answer is "not often," you're not alone.  Even though your smartphone is super convenient for taking photos and videos, and you probably have hundreds of even thousands of them, perhaps you don't want to squint to see images on a small screen? Or you prefer to look at them with others. Or it's too difficult to find what you're looking for.  Regardless of the reason, you might better appreciate these photos and home movies –and relive the memories associated with them – when viewed on that big-screen television you own. Stay-at-home concerts: For musicians and their fans, virtual events are the next best thing to being there Pre...

TV viewership smartphone usage slow down as India relaxes lockdown rules

Gambar
NEW DELHI : Growth in both television viewership and smartphone usage has lost pace in India as the country relaxes lockdown restrictions and people are freer to step out of home. Television continued to lose eyeballs towards the end of the fourth phase of the covid-19 lockdown, with viewership having grown only by 15% in week nine of the post-covid disruption period. This is the fifth weekly consecutive drop as compared to the 24% increase last time, the 29% rise seen in the seventh week, after the figure stood at 31% in week six and 40% in week five. Smartphones are not attracting consumers either, their usage having grown by only 11% in the ninth week of lockdown as compared to the pre-covid period, the figure had stood at 14% previously. The findings are part of the ninth report by television viewership monitoring agency BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) and data measurement firm Nielsen on TV viewership and smartphone us...

How this CES 2020 finalist built a smartphone with sustainability in mind

Gambar
According to the United Nations E-Waste Coalition and the Platform for Accelerating the Circular Economy, the world produces as much as 50 million tons of electronic and electrical waste each year. Think of how that number is created. Dropped phones, faulty batteries, new and exciting phone releases, phones dying just beyond warranty. There are myriad bad reasons why there is so much electronic waste in the world. Teracube founder and CEO Sharad Mittal set out to solve that problem. Teracube is a phone composed of sustainable, ethically-sourced materials made by factories with the best labor conditions, that comes with a four-year warranty. Successfully funded on Kickstarter, it's significantly more budget-friendly than new Apple or Android phones, and, thanks to the warranty and cheaper repairs, it stays with you for longer, reducing e-waste. That also means you wo...

TCPalm tech support: How to create recurring events on a Samsung smartphone

Gambar
© Google A screenshot for Google Calendar. Q: I have a Samsung smartphone. How do I get my phone's calendar to show me occasions like birthdays, wedding anniversaries and such so that those events carry over from year to year? — Norman M., Sebastian A: While all Samsung phones run the Android operating system, not all use the same calendar app.  Samsung's Galaxy series smartphones, for example, usually come with a company-branded calendar app on them called (appropriately enough) "Samsung Calendar." Meanwhile, non-Galaxy Samsung devices tend to have the Android staple Google Calendar pre-installed on them.  (Note: You can install Google Calendar on Galaxy devices as well but must do so manually from the Google Play store if you would prefer to use it over Samsung Calendar.) Both apps accomplish more or less the same overall task load, though they do carry different designs, with Sa...

Smartphone production recovers as Apple gears up for 'iPhone 12' launch

Gambar
The smartphone industry is recovering from COVID-19 production slumps, although Cowen analysts suggest smartphone demand is still uncertain and Apple's flagship iPhones could launch a month or two later than usual. In a research note tracking smartphone build numbers seen by AppleInsider, analyst Krish Sankar says that builds at the top six smartphone manufacturers are trending slightly better than previously expected. Apple's build forecasts for the June quarter remains unchanged at 35 million units, Sankar writes. That's a 5% decline quarter-over-quarter and a 13% slump from the year prior. The analyst adds that the "production supply chain has by and large recovered to normal output rates," but downstream demand is still uncertain. Cowen forecasts that Apple will ship 30 million iPhone units in the second quarter. Of the smartphones that Apple builds in the same period, Sankar said that 77% will be iPhone SE models. Cowen expects iPhone SE builds to rise t...

Inexpensive retinal diagnostics via smartphone

Gambar
Retinal damage due to diabetes is now considered the most common cause of blindness in working-age adults. In low- and middle-income countries, an eye examination via smartphone could help to detect changes at an early stage. This is shown by a new study carried out by scientists from the University of Bonn together with colleagues from Sankara Eye Hospital Bangalore (India). The results are published in the journal Ophthalmology. One of the most dangerous long-term complications of diabetes is vascular damage. In the eye's photosensitive layer, the retina, this also impacts the capillaries. This network of small vessels supplies the sensory cells with oxygen and nutrients. If it deteriorates, abnormal new vessels form instead and further harm the damaged retina. Left untreated, this often result in loss of vision and ultimately blindness. ...

Video: Six DIY smartphone camera rigs made from household objects

Gambar
The Cooperative of Photography, better known as COOPH, has released its latest YouTube video showing how to make the most of your smartphone footage by creating six different smartphone rigs using materials you likely have sitting around at home. As you would expect for these rather primitive homemade solutions, the DIY rigs aren't necessarily aesthetically pleasing but based on the resulting footage, hopefully your video will be. The six-minute video covers how to make a DIY gimbal, a DIY timelapse rig, a DIY stabilizer, a DIY automated slider, a DIY 'spinning' rig and a DIY Gorillapod-style tripod. It's quite the adventure, but considering there's a good chance you're still on some sort of lockdown or stay-at-home order, these DIY projects might be just what you need to keep your creative spirit alive in seclusion. You can find more videos from COOPH on their YouTube channel. ...

OnePlus is disabling the near-infrared 'Color Filter' camera on its 8Pro smartphone over privacy concerns

Gambar
OnePlus has announced it's working on an update for its OnePlus 8 Pro smartphone that will disable the 5MP near-infrared camera that was able to see through certain materials, including some clothing, when used with a 'Photochrom' mode in the native camera app. The Color Filter camera onboard the 8 Pro has been known since the smartphone's announcement back in April. However, not much was shared about the particular camera module at the time. It wasn't until 8 Pro units started hitting the front doors of reviewers when it became clear what the 5MP near-infrared camera could see. Last week in particular, a number of high-profile reviewers and pundits shared examples of just how much the Color Filter camera onboard the 8 Pro could reveal. Most notably, the below video, shared by YouTube channel Unbox Therapy, showed that beyond being able to see through the plastic IR shields built into numerous electronics, it could also see, at least to some degree, undern...

The University of Utah has Possibly Developed a Simple Sensor based accessory that works with a Smartphone to Self-Test for COVID-19

Gambar
A Fox 13 Salt Lake City TV report last week revealed that the University of Utah has been working on a way to detect Coronavirus with a simple sensor smartphone accessory device and app. A user would only have to cough or breathe on a sensor device to get a quick result for COVID-19. What started off at the University as a device to help detect a completely different virus, it could now be reset for tracking COVID-19. Massood Tabib-Azar, the lead engineer working on this project said, "We started this project about 12 months ago, and the main idea was to enable people to have their own personal sensors to detect Zika in places that they travel." The plan is to take the Zika virus sensor and program it to identify COVID-19 instead. "Our prototype is going to be around the size of a quarter and it would be communicating with a cell phone using Bluetooth," said Tabib-Azar. Researchers say if someone were to breathe, cough, sneeze, or blow on t...

Samsung Galaxy A Quantum is the first smartphone with quantum encryption technology

Gambar
© Provided by BGR.in South Korean tech giant Samsung recently launched what can be called the world's first 5G smartphone that uses quantum technology. The phone itself is called the Samsung Galaxy A Quantum. The phone is the first of its kind, offering a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) chipset. This chipset features an LED and a CMOS image sensor. The QRNG chip itself is the SKT IDQ S2Q000. It helps the phone create unpredictable security keys, which let sensitive apps protect the user's privacy. Its function is to detect light emitted by the diode and generate random numbers. These random numbers then are made available to applications to generate encrypted keys. This allows these apps like payment applications to enhance their security on the Galaxy A Quantum. The chip is developed by SK Telecom's Switzerland based subsidiary ID Quantique. Click to expand UP NEXT Watch: Poco F2...

SK Telecom to launch high-security smartphone

Gambar
SEOUL, May 15 (UPI) -- SK Telecom, South Korea's top mobile operator, announced it expects to launch the world's first smartphone equipped with quantum security technology later this month. The Galaxy A Quantum, manufactured by Samsung Electronics, is a fifth-generation model with a chipset ensuring a very high level of mobile communication security, SK Telecom said Thursday. The Seoul-based company said it will be one of the most secure phones on the market because its quantum randomness helps keep malicious actors at bay. "Previous random number generators make keys, which can be decoded because they have some patterns. Hence, they were targeted by hackers," an SK Telecom official told UPI News Korea. "But our newly developed chip comes up with really random number strings, which even supercomputers cannot decipher. It is industry-leading mobile security technology." SK Telecom noted that quantum technology will be used for services requiring id...

Samsung and SK Telecom reveal world̢۪s first smartphone with quantum security tech

Gambar
Samsung and SK Telecom have just unveiled the world's first 5G smartphone with a Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG). Called the Galaxy A Quantum, the device (which is essentially a rebranded Galaxy A71 5G) offers some pretty decent smartphone features, but the QRNG sets it apart from others in that it makes some apps and services much harder to hack. Normal random number generators are used for logging into a variety of smartphone services, such as payment platforms and two-factor authentication, which are routinely targeted by bad actors as they can be bypassed. The QRNG chipset, however — the world's smallest at just 2.5mm by 2.5mm — instead uses an LED and CMOS image sensor. The LED emits "image noise" and the CMOS sensor captures its quantum randomness, using these unpredictable patterns to create truly random number strings. According to SK Telecom, there's no tech out there that can hack this, which makes the Galaxy A Quantum one of the securest phones o...

Why smartphone battery life is far more complex than just having a big battery

Gambar
All-day battery life is a major checkmark for any new smartphone purchase. Here at Android Authority we go to great lengths to test the battery life of every handset we review. Still, it's all too easy to turn to a spec sheet, look at the mAh listing and make all sorts of assumptions based on a single number. This sometimes leads to us being bamboozled by the lackluster battery life from a seemingly huge 4,000mAh cell or surprised at how long a tiny battery inside phones like the Pixel 3a or iPhone SE can last. A phone's mAh rating is a rather meaningless statistic when taken on its own. Battery life is actually a very complicated picture, with a wide range of contributing hardware and software variables. In this article, we'll be digging into why you shouldn't trust mAh as your sole guide to a phone with the longest battery life. Buyers guide: Smartphones with the best battery life What does mAh mean on a battery anyway? The mAh abbreviation you find on battery spec sh...

Samsung Electronics: Smartphone Recovery Pace In Q3 The Decisive Factor

Gambar
We maintain BUY and our six-month-forward target price of KRW64,000 (1.6x 2020F BPS attributable to controlling interest) on Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF). Samsung reported KRW55.3tn in sales and KRW6.45tn in operating profit for 1Q20. By division, IM's operating profit of KRW2.65tn was 29% higher than our estimate helped by the sell-in effect from the Galaxy S20 Ultra, while semiconductor's operating profit stood at KRW4tn. We are particularly encouraged by the robust sales growth (+50% YoY to KRW4.5tn) of system LSI and foundry (including LED). In system LSI, 108-megapixel image sensors helped fuel CIS sales growth, and 5G modem and PMIC also enjoyed modest sales. CIS and 5G modem sales should continue to grow given the expected growth of demand for mid/low-end 5G smartphones in 2H20. We now estimate CIS sales for 2020 will jump more than 30% YoY to around KRW4tn on the growing sales of multiple cameras and high-pixel cameras. For 2Q20, sales will likely retreat 9% QoQ to...

450 Million Minutes Of Talking Shows Us COVID-19 Changed Smartphone Use

Gambar
Texting is nice. Zoom is great for work and birthday parties. And Facebook works for our wider circle of friends. But for close friends, if it's not live-streaming video Houseparty style, it's probably good old fashioned voice. At least during a pandemic shutdown in which we haven't been able to see our friends and family as much as we'd like. Apparently, we can use those smart game-playing video-watching news-reading glass and plastic objects in our hands for ... actually talking to people. TextNow says its users spent more than 450 million minutes talking on the phone in the first full month of shutdown, March. While once that might not have been a shocking thing to say, it's up 36% more than the previous month, and totals 313,000 days or 850 years of cumulative time talking on the phone. Texts are up too, jumping 35% to almost a billion. This is a massive change. "People are craving personal connection while social distancing, and that has ...
